Island Secrets of Corfu/Kerkyra

SKYRIAN HORSE AND PONY SANCTUARY

The Sylva Project

This unique and rare breed of endangered horses from "antiquity" are in need of our help. They are on the verge of extinction! The Skyrian pony, having played a major role in Greek history, is almost forgotten and in desperate need of a "future". Having survived for the last two centuries, primarily on the Greek island of Skyros, this hardy mountain pony has served man time and time again. It may have been Skyrian ponies that Alexander the great took with him when he left Macedonia to conquer the world. And it may be the Skyrian ponies depicted on the Parthenon frieze, not carved in small proportions to emphasize the stature of their riders, but because they are naturally diminutive.

The Skyrian pony, a prime example of the symbiosis between man and animal, may be lost forever unless we all help. The Sylva Project would provide the Skyrian pony with a unique opportunity to survive in this modern day world!

A frantic e-mail, pleading for help, sent around the world.

"Today is Easter Sunday in Greece, 2005. Two days
ago, the roundup of strays by the Tsagaraki sisters
and a municipal van began, to be followed by mass
extermination.
In the name of GOD, I beg you to help."
(Name withheld upon request! - Corfu, GREECE)
AX! Corfu, what a lasting legacy!
