Dolphin Memory

I lived on the Greek island of Skiathos for many years, while married. Skiathis is nothing less than a jewel, a sparkling diamond, perched in the Northern Aegean Sea. My former husband and I ran a yacht chartering and beach front business with jet skies, motor boats for hire, skiing, para sailing and a "mad, absolutely crazy dog/cat/horse/donkey circus" - our own brood of crazy canines and canine cousins"- on Koukounaries Beach; a mile long strectch of silver flecked sand, protected by a lush and pungent pine forest. We also had an equestrian school and boarding stable. This business endeavor was the result of me bartering for abused and neglected horses from the hoards of gypsies that camped in Greece.

My most delightful memories of life on the Aegean, are of the schools of Dolphins that would mysteriously appear out of nowhere and swim alongside our yacht. These magnificent creatures would press their glistening bodies against the mahogany hull of the ship as we traveled at 21 knots through the crystal clear, turquoise tinted waters. The passengers would squeal in delight and our crew had to physically restrain me from jumping overboard to join these glorious creatures in play and camaraderie.

No matter where we were on the Aegean, Niko would sound the yachts horn and they would appear. I decided one day to try and experiment with music. I turned up the speakers on the stereo and played various pieces. Music that was very gentle, melodious and soothing appeared to make them spirited and happy. Music that was harsh such as hard rock caused them to beat a fast retreat.

What I found most amazing was their love of one particular piece of music.

The song is Gloria Gaynors "I WILL SURVIVE" in GREEK! "Tha Epiziso." Was this an "omen"? It was then, and still is one of my favorite songs! As long as " I Will Survive" played, the dolphins would swim along side the "Marijo". When I lowered the music; after two or three minutes, they would disappear under the surface of the sea.

I would then playfully sound the horn, turn up the volume full blast and the powerful sound of that hit song would reverberate over this most magnificent body of water and voila...there would be 5 to 6 of the seas and the planets most glorious and spiritually evolved creatures keeping us company and bringing joy to everyone on board.

This is a most treasured memory of my life in Greece.
